Hernia Surgery

TYPES OF HERNIAS

Repairing Multiple Types Of Hernias

A hernia is the bulging of an organ through a tear in the tissue or muscle that is supposed to hold it in place. Most hernias occur in the abdomen, however, they can also be found in the groin and the diaphragm.

While some hernias may involve monitoring over time, surgery is nearly always recommended to avoid further complications. For example, strangulation can occur if the organ makes its way too far through the opening in the muscles and its blood supply is cut off.

The types of hernias that Dr. T. Ellis “Chip” Barnes repairs through surgery are hiatal hernias, ventral hernias, and inguinal hernias.

Common Causes of Hernias
  • Heavy lifting
  • Injury or obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Prior surgery
  • Diabetes or other diseases

Types Of Hernias

Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia does not involve the abdomen. Instead, part of the stomach bulges through the diaphragm and into the esophagus. The result can be acid reflux, chest pain and heartburn.

Ventral Hernia

Any time organs or intestines protrude through the abdominal wall, it is known as a ventral hernia. Incisional and umbillical hernias are types of ventral hernias. A lump is usually visible in the area of the hernia.

Inguinal Hernia

When intestines push through a weakness in the lower belly and into the groin, this is known as an inguinal hernia. A lump can usually be seen where the groin and thigh come together.
